Modern Pompei
Today Pompei is a city located on the level ground of the River Sarno, it has little more
than a century of life because it has grown in the shadow of the Sanctuary of
the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary which is a place of devotion and very crowded
destination of pilgrimages. The first group of inhabitants of the so called valley
of Pompei developped around St Salvatore Church, which was built in 1093 in Via Astolelle.
In 1600 the river Sarno got swampy and there was a big degradation of the environment
and a stop in the demographic growth which started again only after the construction
of the Sanctuary wanted by Bartolo Longo (a lawyer who came to Pompei in 1872 with the task to administrate Countess
De Fusco's properties). According to him the city would become a land of faith
and prayers of hope and charity,in opposition with the ancient pagan city. In
1923 three years before Bartolo Longo died the town of Pompei was born and it was called city only in 2004 thanks to an ordinance of the then
President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Today the principal street of Pompei are : Via Provinciale( already Via Lepanto), Via Piave, Via Roma, and Via Sacra where there is a Healthy Fount of mineral waters with therapeutic properties.
This features let Pompei become a station of care, resort and tourism. Along the
main street there is the greater part of the shops and hotels of the city while in front of the Church there is the most important square which
is dedicated to Bartolo Longo.
The main source of economy for Pompei is tourism and the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary and the ruins are the most important touristic poles. Tourism is also emphazised by the several
manifestation of Pompei Summer.
Pompei is twined with the city of Kjongiu in South Corea, with Latiano in province
of Brindisi, with Tarragona in Spain and with Xi'an in China.
Pompei is crossed by three railway lines which connect several areas of the city.
